Are students and teachers ready for technology?

Technology has been changing the teaching and learning environment in the Philippines. It has brought some changes on the way things are being delivered and learned in the classroom. Teachers are using LCD TVs, softwares and computer programs as aids in delivering instructions and are very vocal about the positive effects of these technologies to their students. Aware of the many benefits of technology in the classroom, I'm surprised to find out that some teachers and learners are not ready for technology. Last year, I was invited to a training program sponsored by the Department of Education in our region. My topic was on "integrating technology in the classroom." I'm surprised to find out that more than half of the teachers who attended the seminar do not know or have a little skill in computer manipulation, internet surfing, etc... In my Educational Technology classes, I introduced blogging to my student-teachers. I observed that they are having a hard time digesting how blogging can be used in their classrooms once they get to teach in an actual classroom. I think this is due to their lack of skills in blogging. This is somewhat reflected in their works (blog posts)... Although these experiences are somewhat frustrating for someone like me who advocates the use of technology in the classroom, I'm still very positive that given the training and access to technology, educators and students will appreciate the wonders that technology can bring to education. But as educators, it is our duty to update ourselves with the technologies available for our classes and not rely too much in our government or in our organization. Commitment to your job means willingness to contribute our time, effort and money. It is our duty to bring about change to the learning environment, a change that will leave a mark to the lives of our students! So, are teachers and students ready for technology? A big big YES! All we need is the will to be part of this revolution!
